SOPs of Using Fume Hoods
Fume hoods are vital for ensuring the safety of laboratory personnel by controlling exposure to hazardous fumes and vapors. AAKAR Scientific provides high-performance ducted fume hoods that meet international standards. To optimize their use, here are some Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) every lab should follow.
Pre-Use Checks
- Ensure the fume hood is operational by checking the airflow indicator or alarm.
- Make sure the sash glass is clean, and the opening is within recommended height limits.
- Inspect for obstructions or stored items inside the hood. A fume hood is not a storage unit.
During Use
- Work at least 6 inches inside the hood to ensure containment.
- Keep equipment away from the baffle and sides to avoid disrupting airflow.
- Avoid rapid movements and close the sash when not actively working.
Post-Use Protocols
- Clean up all chemical residues and spills.
- Turn off all equipment and allow the hood to run for a few minutes post-operation.
- Close the sash completely and record usage details if necessary.
Maintenance SOPs
- Schedule routine maintenance, including airflow tests and general inspection.
- Keep a maintenance log and service reports.
AAKAR Scientific provides user training and detailed SOP documentation with every installation to ensure optimal and safe usage of fume hoods.
